When not watching shadows, Erik Mortenson works as a teacher, writer, literary scholar, and translator, and is the author of the academic book Ambiguous Borderlands: Shadow Imagery in Cold War American Culture. He is also the author of Capturing the Beat Moment: Cultural Politics and the Poetics of Presence, which was selected as a Choice outstanding academic title in 2011, as well as Translating the Counterculture: The reception of the Beats in Turkey.
